2022 Schütz 350

Looking back

November 2022 marked 350 years since the death of Heinrich Schütz, and IT&T celebrated with Schütz 350: Father of the German Baroque at the University Church of St Mary the Virgin on Saturday 5 November 2022, directed by Edward Higginbottom with the Oxford Consort of Voices.

The programme surveyed Schütz's choral writing, from the madrigalian motets of the 1625 Cantiones sacrae to the monumental 21-part setting of Zion spricht from the Psalmen Davids of 1619. Following Divine Music earlier in the year, the project was run as a side-by-side: student singers, recruited through an open call, rehearsed and performed alongside the professional singers and players.

We are grateful to the University of Oxford Faculty of Music for supporting the project.
