Our fourth concert turns to another period of profound upheaval, exploring the music of England during the Civil War and the Commonwealth. Rather than reflecting conflict directly, the programme reveals how composers responded to uncertain times with works of remarkable intimacy, humanity and grace. Songs by Henry Lawes and Nicholas Lanier sit alongside instrumental music by William Lawes, Matthew Locke and Tobias Hume, offering a glimpse into a rich musical culture that continued to flourish despite political turmoil.
